I had to do integer updates to get vrr to trigger on my monitor on both linux and windows

I've had multiple server owners announce that they'll be deleting their communities if they get flagged as requiring verification. We have people who either can't verify because the AI says they're not an adult, or people who won't verify because of the exponentially increasing privacy concerns. It says a lot when it's easier to get drugs than it is to freely talk to your friends.
lonjil Discord's AI decided to mark a server I admin as 18+. so even the non-18+ channels on the server can't be viewed from iOS and maybe the whole server will be unavailable for people who don't do the video ID thing
2026-02-09 09:14:48
When the UK started requiring ID for anything flagged as adult, we 'de-nsfw'd' a server. Still the same content, but any channel marked as nsfw got set to sfw, just so we didn't have people missing half our conversations or having to share memes in DMs
2026-02-09 09:21:25
At least over here, the Internet stopped being a free place a while ago. Now we've been having AI facial scans, credit card checks and ID uploads just because parents can't do their job anymore and the government knows we can't do anything about it. We've had petitions with millions of signatures met with "lol no", now with a VPN ban proposed to make sure we have to. Just the other day my sister was finalising her first house purchase, a final age verification check failed 4 times with 2 days before she was due to move in, so she was nearly homeless because the AI thought she looks too young, and the appeal option was "make sure you're in a bright place and try again"

Something I would consider an elementary school skill... Oh also we do display an example. Every 50th person sends the example instead of the asked number. I wonder if it's dyscalculia or dyslexia or something else. Well, attaching an audio could probably reduce the number of frustrated people...

Numerous signal codecs use a Rice code for prediction residues. In predictive algorithms, such residues tend to fall into a two-sided geometric distribution, with small residues being more frequent than large residues, and the Rice code closely approximates the Huffman code for such a distribution without the overhead of having to transmit the Huffman table. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golomb_coding#Applications

> Innovative DICOM Medical Imaging > Today, Apple introduces new DICOM medical imaging presets and the Medical Imaging Calibrator to enable use in diagnostic radiology, allowing radiologists to view diagnostic images directly on Studio Display XDR. This of course also makes a good use case for DICOM with JXL payloads, since if you're going to have radiologists getting that display so they can work from home, compression will be even more relevant than in a setting where all the images are on a local network.

YouTubers frantically swapping thumbnails and titles of the video every minute for 48 hours after upload is extremely annoying. Often they even upload 10 titles/thumbnails at once, so it's random on every refresh, even if you refresh several times per second. Do you know any userscript which saves title/description into a cache, and permanently "fixes" them into a static title/description?

You can click on the name in the upper-left to get to the SWF. Converter script is currently on my system, it converts lots of stuff wrong so I won't publish it for now. (Also it is generated by an LLM which contributes a bit to that fact.)

Oh also ideally purely animations and ideally autoplaying, without start button at ghe beginning — while that is actually skipped, none of the SVGs generated from something with a start button are otherwise looking 100% identical right now; also would like to be able to actually have those interactive stuff working at some point but would not like to have JS required for simple things like this and no idea if I audio within SVG can be kept working then du to the limited styleabiility of fhe audio player and sadly lack of SVGTiny's audio thing which could have helped here for custom play buttons that start animation and audio while not requiring JS maybe?

Maybe something for web interop. Alongside some other things like wallclock support to be able to show elements based on the actual time in an SVG without requiring JS...

It's impossible to fixable. This is one of the new things that's breaking algorithms. People have realized that different people are attracted to different things. You can attract more audiences by using different images, as this breaks the core preference-based recommendation algorithm. Changing a video's thumbnails attracts a completely random audience; YouTube's algorithm thinks the video is popular since it's liked by so many different people

Now I just need more support for invoker commands (<https://open-ui.org/components/future-invokers.explainer/>) for audio cotrol in browser and I may be able to: - switch to a # part on the same HTML site instead of having to use a individual HTML file for each SWF (which then redirects back to index.html) just to stop the audio when a user wants to switch to a different SVG - Have SVGs with included play buttons (just like many SWFs have) that should do look the same everywhere Fullscreen invoker commands might also be neat.

Exorcist > Mozilla devs don't have good signals on what the userbase actually uses in their browser testing is the duty of developer, not user
2026-03-23 04:24:30
It's not the testing that's the problem, it's the lack of understanding what the users actually want, use and like
2026-03-23 04:25:42
if it seems to you like nobody cares about some feature and it's a pain in the ass to maintain, you probably want to remove it
2026-03-23 04:27:09
and if users that really really like and heavily that feature don't have metrics enabled, as a developer you don't see them until they come out complaining on social media about the removal of said feature

been a long time since I looked at the numbers but if I recall correctly, it's a lot better than PNG at photographic content.
_wb_
2026-03-23 02:22:27
for lossless, j2k is somewhere between cjxl e2 and e3 in terms of compression (for photographic images), i.e. better than PNG, more or less comparable to webp but can handle > 8-bit. For e.g. 10-bit or 12-bit, it's a LOT better than PNG. There's a reason medical imaging uses J2K.
2026-03-23 02:24:12
Encode speed with opj_compress is an order of magnitude slower than cjxl e3 though.

AccessViolation_
2026-03-24 10:18:34
the QOI spec is rather unfortunate in that it seems to make some restrictions on encoding, that are unnecessary as far as I can tell. e.g. "a valid encoder must not issue issue 2 or more consecutive palette index chunks that point to the same pixel value. it must encode them as a run length of that pixel value instead." this means you can't for example optimize the file layout for after-the-fact compression with zstd, or optimize for decode speed. every image only has one valid encoding

2026-03-24 11:37:40
well that's kinda dumb, it's not like a decoder would care
2026-03-24 11:39:13
QOI only truly optimizes on decoder speed anyways, and I don't think that such a restriction would help decoding to be meaningfully faster

keep in mind that some JPEGs extracted out might look weird because IIRC they are inverted CMYK. they should look right if you attach this ICC profile and view them in software with color management support. you can attach the ICC file with something like [ExifTool](https://exiftool.org/). also a small/minor warning but this ICC file attached is just a quickly modified version of a pre-existing one (from here: https://github.com/saucecontrol/Compact-ICC-Profiles#cmyk) but with the curves inverted but none of the metadata/ID stuff was changed so there's no way at a quick metadata glance to tell it apart from the non-inverted one.

tbh I could have done without it, it was more "I'll spend several hours on that to just have a green check mark", as my bank app already works without but, in order to use Google Pay (thus to add my debit card to Google Wallet), I needed it — and it is easier to use as it is the only way to pay at the register in stores
